First week of November!

• I hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween!
• Great costumes today! We are very lucky to go to such an amazing school with such creative administrators!
• Grade 3/4- The grade 3/4's will be having a quiz on Tuesday.  I will be assessing fractions and place value to 1000 for the grade 3's and fractions, decimals, and relating decimals to fractions for grade 4.  The students have been working really hard and I am very proud of them.  Please keep practicing adding and subtracting facts to 18 nightly.  We will be starting multiplication in November!
• Grade 6-We will be having a quiz on Tuesday. It will be on improper fractions, mixed numbers, ratio, and percent.  We have continuously been reviewing concepts from September as well which were representing large numbers and integers.  They all have been working hard and are asking questions when they do not understand a concept.  This is such an important skill to have and I am so proud of them.

Week of October 19-21

• I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful October weekend!
• This is a short week because of the teacher's convention on Thursday and Friday (no school for students on these days).
• Gr. 3/4 - We will continue with our work from last week which includes representing fractions, comparing and ordering fractions with the same denominator (gr.3) and same numerator/denominator (gr.4). The fours have also been working with decimals to hundredths. We will also be continuing to work with numbers up to 1000 (3) and 10 000 (4).  It is very important for ALL students to be reviewing their adding and subtracting facts to 18 on a nightly basis.
• Gr. 6- We will continue to work with improper fractions/mixed numbers, ratio, and percent this week.  I need students to continue reviewing their math facts on a nightly basis.
• A great website to practice facts is www.playkidsgames.com, click on math games, then math fact practice.  The students are familiar with this site from class.

Week of Oct. 13-16

• Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! I hope you all are enjoying your long weekend.
• Grade 3/4 - We will be continue to work on fractions this upcoming week with  the focus being comparing fractions. The grade 4's will start to investigate decimal numbers to hundredths and how decimals relate to fractions.  I would like everyone to continue working on their adding and subtracting facts to 18 on a nightly basis.
• Grade 6- We will continue to work on converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa this week.  We will also be starting to compare and put the improper fractions and mixed numbers in order.  I would like the students to continue to practice their multiplication and division facts on a nightly basis.  
• A huge thank you to everyone  who voted for our school during the "Adopt a School" contest!

Oct. 5-9

• I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!
• I will be sending quizzes home on Monday to grade 3/4 and grade 6 students.  Parents, please sign and return to school on Tuesday.  
• Grade 3/4- the students have been working very hard and my expectation for their math homework is nightly fact practice 10 min.  We are starting to look at fractions this week.  It is important to understand where we use and see fractions in our everyday lives.
• Grade 6- we are shifting gears and starting to look at mixed numbers and improper fractions this week.  I briefly introduced the topic at the end of the week to the students and they seemed to grasp the concept.  We will be starting with a lot of hands on practice with manipulatives to show what a mixed number actually is (whole number and a proper fraction).  
• Please vote for our school on the Indigo -Adopt a School contest!
• I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families.  I am very thankful for your children!  I love my job and they are a joy to teach.

Week of September28- October 2

• What a beautiful weekend!  I hope everyone had a relaxing time with friends and family.
• Great job to everyone on Friday for participating in the Terry Fox Run.  We had a great time. Thanks so much to Sharon for handing out the apples at the end of the day.
• Grade 6- I would ask that everyone continue practicing your math facts each night.  We will also be having our quiz on Tuesday.  This will include representing large numbers and numbers less than ten thousandths.  Representing numbers includes the following:  writing the number in standard form, written form, expanded form, and base 10 words.  The students have been doing wonderful with this outcome.  We will also be comparing and ordering integers on this quiz too.
• Grade 3/4 math-  We were originally going to have this quiz on Friday, but I wanted the students to have the full class to write it ( we had the Terry Fox walk for part).  I will be asking the students to represent numbers to 1000(gr.3) and 10 000(gr.4).  This will include the following:  writing the number they hear, expanded form of numbers, written form, using base ten pictures and words. We have also been working on comparing and ordering numbers too. Please have the students practicing their adding and subtracting facts to 18 each night.  That is their homework for me...practice,practice, practice :o)  Their facts and strategies are in their homework duotang that Mrs. Cox sends home.
• When the quiz is completed and corrected, please sign and return with your child to school.

Week of Sept.21-25

• I hope everyone had a beautiful weekend!  The weather was amazing.
• All three grades had a wonderful week, with lots of hard work.  
• This week in gr.3/4, we will be reviewing how to represent numbers to 1000(gr.3) and 10 000 (gr.4).  This means students will write the number they hear in standard form, expanded form, and in base 10 pictures.  We will be comparing and ordering numbers this week as well. I will be giving an assessment on these outcomes on Friday.  Please be reviewing math facts nightly! These are improving, but we need to have them in 3 seconds.
• This week in grade 6 math, we will be continuing to work on our "boot camp" which is a review of a variety of skills that the students would have learned in previous years.  They are also learning about representing numbers into the hundred millions and less than ten thousandths.  The students will be introduced to integers (positive and negative) this week.  I am feeling that our assessment for these two outcomes may fall around Sept. 30, however the students and I will determine the exact date later this week.  Keep working on those math facts at home!

Week of September 14-18

• Wow! What a great first week back to school.  I would like to thank everyone for attending the "Meet the Teacher" night.
• Grade 6 math- I would encourage everyone to continue working on their multiplication and divisions facts this week for homework....10 min a night would be great.
• This week we are reviewing basic skills and we are looking at different ways to represent numbers greater than one million.  The standard form of a number is the number itself.  Ex.  7 845 223.  The expanded form of a number looks at the place value of each digit.  Ex: 7 000 000 + 800 000+ 40 000+ 5000+ 200 + 20 + 3.  And the written form of the number  is the number in words.  Ex:  seven million eight hundred forty-five thousand two hundred twenty-three.

• Grade 3/4 math-  I would ask both grades to be practicing their adding and subtracting facts to 18 each night this week for homework.  This is so very important!  
• This week Grade 3 will be learning ways to represent numbers to 1000 and the grade fours will be representing numbers to 10 000.  The standard form of  a number is simply the number itself. Ex. 8954.  The expanded form of a number looks at the place value of each digit. Ex: 8000+ 900+50+4.  The written form of a number is the number in words. Ex: eight thousand nine hundred fifty-four.
