Week of October 28-Nov.1

  • I need to take this opportunity to thank all of my students for making my birthday on Friday so memorable. A huge thank you for the treats!
  • We will be having our weekly spelling tests on Fridays.  We should be finished of the high frequency words by mid to end Jan.  We complete various hands on activities with these words throughout the week.
  • Grade 5 math- I will be finishing our oral quiz on Monday for those students who didn't get to do it on Friday.  I am going to have our review of solving one step equations with a single variable (Ex.  y+16=20 therefore y=4) on Tuesday with a quiz on Thursday.
  • If you have any specific time frames that you would like to request for parent teacher interviews, please jot a note to me because we meet to plan the times on Tuesday of this week.  Slips will be going home on Wednesday. Interviews will be Thursday, Nov. 7th (evening) and Friday, Nov. 8th.  I will be available to do interviews after school on the Wednesday, Nov. 6th.
  • A reminder for all students to be reading 20 min. each evening.  Those maps are getting colored! :o)
  • Have a wonderful week!

Here Comes a Full Week!

  • Welcome to a full week! I hope everyone had an enjoyable few days off.
  • A reminder to all students to be filling in their reading passports each evening!  20 min. per night is what I am expecting.  Parents don't forget to pull out the reading comprehension questions that I sent home in September and get your son/daughter talking about what they are reading.
  • We have moved into our first Social Studies unit and the students are very excited. We are studying how we learn about the past.  I have brought in a few old artifacts to class and had the students try and guess what they were. There were some amazing guesses!
  • Grade 5 math students are continuing to -variable, one-step equations with whole number coefficients and whole number solutions. For example,    y+3=9 therefore y=6 or  5t=25 therefore t=5. Please continue reviewing not only multiplication facts, but there corresponding division facts as well.  We will be having another oral quiz on Friday. Remember approx. 3 sec. for multiplication and 5 sec. for division.
  • The next text type study we will be looking at will be persuasive writing.
  • I hope everyone has a wonderful week and I am hoping the book order should be here mid-week.

Week of Oct. 7-11

  • I hope everyone is enjoying the super weekend!
  • I have to say how much I enjoyed listening to the students share their recounts on Friday! Great job!
  • We will have a health quiz on Monday. We have been reviewing over the last couple of days. Some of our topics will include the following: how to be a good communicator, how to deal with strong emotions, what to do when conflict arises, what causes them stress and strategies to help with stress, and what makes a good friend.
  • The gr. 4 math assessments will be held Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Please make sure the students get lots of rest and have a good breakfast. The letter that Mr. Martin sent home included a web site with some sample questions for the students to try.
  • Congratulations to the cross country team for a wonderful job at the meet last Monday. I am very proud of all of you!
  • Canteen on Tuesday.
  • Congratulations to everyone for their hard work during the school fundraiser.  Madison was the top seller with Colton N. placing third.  Way to go! It was quite a sight seeing Mr. Q and Mr. D shave off their hair on Friday.
  • There will be no school on Monday, October 14th (Thanksgiving) and October 17 & 18th (Teachers convention).
  • School pictures will take place on Wednesday, October 16th.
  • Grade 5 math students will be finishing their quiz on Monday (some have already finished) on estimating strategies.  We had our mental math quiz last Wednesday. I would still encourage students to be reviewing their multiplication facts each night. Our goal in grade 5 is withing 3seconds. We will be having another quiz on these in a few weeks. It is important for the students to have a quick recall of these before we move into 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication.
  • Book orders due on Friday.
