Last Week Before Christmas!

  • So hard to believe that this is the last full week before Christmas!
  • A reminder that the secret Santa gifts are due on Tuesday, December 18th. There is a $5.00 limit.
  • Everyone did a wonderful job at the Christmas concert on Friday. I am very proud of you all!
  • This week the only homework will be reading each night for 20 min.
  • We will be skating Friday afternoon.
  • Merry Christmas everyone! I wish all of the students, families and staff of ACC a wonderful Christmas break.

Week of December 10-14

* I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of my students for their behaviour at the "Wizard of Oz" on Friday. I am very proud of you all!
*  Christmas concert is this Friday beg. at 1:00pm for the public.
*We have picked names for our gift exchange this year. It is a $5.00 limit and I would love for all the gifts to be in by Dec. 18.
*This is Ms. Flood's last week with us at ACC. She has been doing a wonderful job and we will miss her very much.
* Islander in the News social studies assignment is due Monday, December 10th.
* Our storyboard assignment is due Tuesday, December 11th.  The students will be getting approx. 1 1/2 hrs. to work on this in class tom. so there should only be a bit it finish up in the evening.

Week of Dec. 3-7th

* Welcome to the first week in December! Please remember to dress warm and bring hats, mitts, etc. for outside.
*Winter bus starts Monday, December 3rd.
*Monday is food/milk order day for the month.
*Our school will be attending the "Wizard of Oz" at the Confederation Center on Friday, December 7th.  There will be no charge to the children as Home and School will be covering the cost. Wow! I would like to thank the committee for being so generous.  The only cost will be lunch. I will let the children know where we will be eating early in the week. The permission forms will be going home at the first of the week.
*The Dental clinic will continue this week.
* Ms. Flood is doing a wonderful job with all of the students and we are excited to have her for two more weeks!

Week of Nov.26-29

* There will be no school on Friday, November 30 because it is a school development day.
* Thank you so much for everyone returning the report card slips and for the kind comments. I absolutely love teaching your children and it is so important to work together.
* Ms. Flood had a wonderful first full week with our class! A reminder to everyone that she has assigned a social studies poster to be handed in on Tuesday.  The paper was divided into four sections and each represented the four time periods from your social studies book.  She will be giving some time in class tom. to work on it.
* Winter bus starts Monday, December 3rd.
* Money for hot lunches for the week should be handed in tom. morning. Please separate as they go to two different people.
* Book order due on Thursday.
*  Grade 6 girls needles on Wednesday, Novemember 28th.

Week of November 19-23

  • A big welcome back to Ms. Stacey Flood! She will be returning to our class as our student teacher for one month!  We are so excited to be having her back.
  • A reminder that lunch money for the hot meals is due tom. Please try to have the money separated because they go to two different places.
  • Grade 5's will be finishing their math test tom. on patterns and equations.
  • A reminder to be reading 20 minutes each night. Parents, it would be beneficial to pull out the sheet of questions that I gave everyone at parent teacher to ask your son/daughter. You could pick one evening this week and ask one question from each category of questions (literal, inferential, or evaluative). Orally being able to answer comprehension questions is a very important skill. If they think it, they can say it. If they can say it,  then they can write it. :o)
  • I will be sending the book order home tom.
  • Thank you to all of my students for handing in their science projects on Friday! I can tell they worked very hard.
  • Report cards will be going home on Thursday, November 22.

Week of November 13-16 (Tue.-Fri)

  • A huge thank you to all parents who came in for parent teacher interviews on Wednesday evening and Thursday. I feel fortunate to be working with such a supportive group of parents! Thank you for all of your support at home.
  • Report cards will be going home on Thursday, November 22.
  • A reminder that our science projects are due on Friday, Novemeber 16.  I have encouraged the students to be doing a little bit each night.
  • Grade 5's will be finishing up their Patterns and Equations math unit at the end of this week or the first of next.
  • This upcoming week is Bully Awareness Week.  Friday is "Wear Pink Day" and I would encourage everyone to wear pink. We will be discussing how wearing pink to support this week came to be.
  • Next Monday, November 19th, Ms. Flood will be returning to our class for one month. We are very excited to be having her join our class.

Week of Nov.5-7

  • This week will be a short week due to parent teacher interviews on  Novemeber 8 and a PD day on November 9. Also, there will be no school on Monday, Nov. 12 because of Remembrance Day.
  • I am looking forward to meeting with everyone at interviews Wed. evening or Thur. day. If your child has not brought back your form to say whether you can/can't attend, please do so Mon.
  • Monday is lunch order day for the month. There was also a new form sent home for hot lunches.  This looks like a great opportunity for the kids. Please check the calendar that was attached to the letter for options and dates.
  • I have assigned a Remembrance Day poster to be finished for Monday. All students started these in class and should be just finishing them up.
  • We will be having a small matching quiz on Tuesday in Science on weather instruments. 
  • This is book fair week!  We will be viewing the books on Monday morning and purchasing on Wednesday.
  • The students loved our recent read-aloud called Hiding Edith.  It was filled with emotion and adventure.  I would encourage you to get your child to talk about the story with you.

Week of Oct. 29-Nov.2

  • I have to send out a huge "thank you" to all of my students for making my birthday last Thursday so memorable. They were so thoughtful and kind!  The musical version of "Happy Birthday" brought tears to my eyes. I consider myself one of the luckiest teachers on PEI to have such a wonderful group of children in my class.
  • I will be sitting with other teachers on Tuesday to plan out parent teacher interview times.  The interviews will be held on Wednesday evening, November 7 and Thursday November 8.  If you would like a certain time, please send a note in with your child on Monday.
  • The grade 5 math students just started into Unit 1 called Patterns and Equations.  I would still remind everyone that it is a good idea to be reviewing mental math facts each night.  Our response time for 'x' facts should be 3 seconds or less and division facts should be 5 seconds or less.
  • We have been working on Informational reports in language arts and will continue to work on them this week. The students have chosen a topic related to weather and we have been discussing the importance of text features (pictures, captions, headings, glossary, maps, tables, charts, bold print, italics, etc.).  Students will include some of these text feature within their informational reports.
  • Lunch order forms will be going home mid-week. Monday, Nov.5 will be lunch order day for the month of November.
  • A reminder to be reading 20 minutes each night. Parents don't forget to be having conversations with your child about what it is they are reading.
  • Happy Halloween to everyone! I will be meeting on Monday to get the specifics on what activities will be planned for Wednesday and I will discuss this with the students on Tuesday!

Week of October 22-26

  • Thank you to everyone for such a great week! It was quite a week at ACC, from Mrs. Jay kissing a pig to Mrs. Ranahan celebrating her 40th year with the school board. I want to thank my students for making my week a great one too!
  • Grade 5 math quiz (part 2) will be on Wednesday. This will involve multiplication facts, estimating, rounding, and some addition/subtraction. Don't forget to bring back your math tests signed.
  • The book order will be due on October 24th.
  • The class will have a weather folklore poster due on Thursday.  This will be explained on Tuesday. For example, Red sky at night sailors delight, red sky in the morning sailors take warning.
  • Don't forget to be reading 20 min. each night and filling in your reading passport.

Week of October 15-19

* I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of my students for working so hard last week!  Ms. Flood was very impressed and she is looking forward to coming back to our class in November!

*We will be starting our weather unit on Monday.
* The grade 5's will be having a math test later in the week. I will decide on an exact day with the class on Monday.
* A reminder for all students to be reading 20 min each night.  Remember, you can always take a book home from the classroom library to read in the evening! :o)
* Thank you to everyone who returned fundraising money. Our class did great.
* It is starting to get colder out and I would remind everyone to make sure they are dressing appropriately (coats, hats, mitts, etc.)

Week of October 9-10

*We have a short week this week. No school on Thursday and Friday because of the annual Teacher's Convention.

*I would like to welcome Ms. Stacey Flood into our class to observe on Tuesday and Wednesday. Stacey is a second year Education student from UPEI and she will be doing her practicum in our class from Nov. 19- Dec. 14. We are very excited to have her join our class.

Week of Oct.1-5

*  Lunch orders are due tom. morning. Book orders due on Friday.
*  Pictures are due back on Friday, Oct. 5 if you plan on purchasing any.
*  Fundraising forms and money need to be handed in by Tuesday, Oct. 9th.
*  Students are working away on their personal recounts. We decided that the due date for these will be Wednesday, Oct. 10th.  We will be spending lots of time this week working on rough copies.
*  We will be having a Health quiz on Friday, October 5th. Some of the topics that we have been discussing are the following: how to deal with emotions, what causes stress, how to deal with stress, effective communication skills, conflict/conflict resolution skills, healthy relationships within families, friendships across various age groups, and how to co-operate within a group.  I have typed up a review for the students that I will give them at the first of the week.
*  The Gr. 5 math students will have an oral multiplication quiz on Friday.
* I am so excited to paint our watercolor pumpkins tom.!
* I would like to take this opportunity to thank my students for working so hard on their "Being Thankful" writing activity on Friday. They were very touching.

Week of Sept. 24-28

  • What a great week! I just wanted to thank all of my students for putting so much effort into their work.  I especially noticed how rich and interesting our discussions have been with our "Art Is..." book club.  I love it!
  • We will be starting to brainstorm ideas for our personal recounts tom.
  • Thank you to everyone who handed in their Health posters.  I am still missing a few. Be sure to hand it in as soon as possible.
  • The Gr. 6 girls will have their immunization needles on Wednesday, Sept. 26.
  • A reminder to all Gr. 5 students to be reviewing multiplication facts each night.
  • Thank you to everyone for participating in our Terry Fox walk Friday afternoon.

Week of Sept. 17-21

  • Picture day is tom. Monday, Sept. 17th.
  • We are working on a book club called "Art Is..." in language arts.  The students are doing a great job contributing their thoughts, ideas, and opinions.  Each group will be reading a different non-fictional book on art.  The students will be responsible for completing a book review and they will be creating their own piece of art. I will be explaining both of these assignments and assigning a due date soon.
  • I would ask the Gr. 5 students to be reviewing their math facts each night. We are responsible for knowing up to 9X9 (we do go over the 10's and 11's too). We are also responsible for their related division facts.
  • All students should be reading 20 min. a night and logging it in their reading passports.
  • We have just completed the 500 most frequently used words in spelling/word work.  This week I will be discussing the Buddy Study program with the students.  Each student will have their own individual list of words to learn.
  • I am looking forward to seeing everyone Monday night at "Meet the Teacher" night! 6:30 p.m.
  • I placed the book order on Friday. It should be in by this Friday.

Week of Sept.10-14

  • Wow! What a great first week! Everyone was so excited to be back and our days flew by.  I love how much effort I am seeing from every student.
  • Meet the teacher will be held on Monday, September 17th at 6:30 and I am looking forward to seeing everyone there.
  • Just a reminder that all students should be reading 20 minutes each night.  Parents it is a great idea to talk to your children about what they have read.  This will increase their comprehension skills.  Studens have reading passports that parents initial (similar to the bookmarks from last year).

Last Full Week of School!

*Wow! It is so hard to believe that this is the last full week of school.  Our last school day will be Tuesday, June 26.

* Health assignment is due Monday, June18.

* Our trip to Shining Waters will be on Friday, June 22 with the rain date on Monday, June 25. the permission forms will be going home the first of the week. I have all of my chaperones.  Thank you very much for the help!

* Be sure to keep an eye out for your son/daughter's scrapbook that will be coming home on Thursday.  We are recording them on CD on Tuesday.  They are very proud of their work.....so am I.

* Report cards will be sent home on Tuesday, June 26.

*I am still missing a few school supply fees.  I would appreciate these coming in as soon as possible.

*  Spring concert will be held on Friday, June 15 at 1:00. Everyone is welcome to attend.
*A reminder if you have not paid for school supplies, could you please send it in as soon as possible.
*  The students will be orally reading a poem Thursday, June 14 in class.  It has been on the homework board for a week or so.  They can practice reading it aloud at home.
* We have a Health assignment due on Monday, June 18.  The students have an outline with the description of the assignment.
* Pizza and garlic fingers will be next Thursday, June 21 because we will be at Shining Waters on the next day, Friday, June 22.

What a week!

*  I had such a great time at the build on Saturday.  Thank you so much to all of the volunteers who showed up to help.  What a wonderful sense of accomplishment.  I am so proud of the community of Borden and I love saying that I teach at Amherst Cove.
* The students did a great job reading their stories to the Creative Writing class at Charlottetown Rural.  They were so proud of their finished product.
*  Thank you to everyone who has paid the school supply fee of $35.  I am still missing a few.

Week of May 28- June 1

* Book order is due on Tuesday, May 29
* We are going on a field trip on Wednesday, May 30 to Charlottetown.  We will be going on the Factory tour at Cows followed by a trip to Charlottetown Rural High School to share our writing with the Creative Writing class there.  The trip will cost $3.00 for the tour plus some extra if the students would like to buy an ice cream at Cows.  We are taking our lunch with us to eat at the picnic tables.  So remember to take a packed lunch that day (no microwaveable items please)
*  I am so proud of my students for having their stories handed in on time.  I could tell that they felt very good handing them in. We have been working hard on time management skills and breaking the work up into small chunks so everything doesn't get left until the last minute.
* Social Studies project is due on Thursday, May 31.
* Six sleeps until build day!  My dad and I will be there with bells on to volunteer.  If you haven't signed up yet, do so soon!
* Congratulations to all of the students who participated at the track meet on Thursday.  You made our school very proud.

Week of May 22-25

*  I hope everyone had a fantastic long weekend!
*  A quick reminder to sign up to volunteer for the "build day" on June 2.  The countdown is on!
*  I have assigned a Social Studies project that will be due on May 31.  Part 1 is to be done at home and Part 2 will be completed at school.  I have typed up an outline and distributed it to the students last week. Part 1 includes making a map of the seven continents and Part 2 is creating a Powerpoint presentationdescribing mountains, oceans, lakes, and islands.  The project handout goes into more detail.
*  The good copy of our narrative fantasy stories will be due this Friday.  The students have been working very hard on these in class. 
*  A reminder for everyone to be reading their 20 minutes each night.
*  Good luck to everyone participating at the Track and Field meet on Wednesday!

Week of May 14-18

* I want to take this opportunity to say how proud I am of everyone for doing such a fantastic job at the Music Festival last week.  Congratulations!

* Rough copy of our fictional/fantasy stories will be due on Wednesday. We will be revising/editing on Wed., Thur., and Fri. with Mrs. Brant.

Week of April 16-20

  • A big congratulations to Isaac and Amber who participated at the Provincial Science Fair.  Amber placed in the top 8!
  • We will wrap up our Human Body unit in Science this week. It is looking like our quiz will be on Thursday.

  • The Gr.5 students are continuing to work on our Geometry unit.
  • Tuesday will be "Twin Day".  Students can pay a toonie and support the Easter Seals Campaign.

  • Wow! What a week! Last week was our Winter Carnival and we ended with a BANG.  On Friday, we received an unbelieveable announcement from Let Them Be Kids.  Our school was a recepient of a grant for funding for a new playground.  We all received T-shirts and it looks like Saturday, June 2 is the big build day. I was so proud of all of the work that the playground committee has put forth.  What a caring community! I am a very lucky teacher!
  • ABC Autobiography will be due on Tuesday.
  • Science quiz on the Digestive and Respiratory systems on Wednesday.
  • Book orders due on Wednesday.
  • Science Fair for Gr. 5-8 on Tuesday, March 13.
  • I will be sending home parent teacher interview slips tom. please sign and return.
  • I am very proud of everyone for staying on top of their work. It is so much easier to stay organized when we stay on task in class and when we decide to do a bit of work each night.

Winter Carnival Week!

  • I want to take this opportunity to say a big congrats. to everyone who participated in the Royal Canadian Legion Poster and Literary contest.  Winners for the Colour Poster Grades 4-6: 1) Jason 2) Rebecca 3) Todd and the winners for the Poem Grades 4-6: 1) Rebecca 2) Morgan 3) Dakota
  • This is Winter Carnival week! There are special days planned. Tuesday will be Beach day, Wednesday will be Crazy Hair/PJ day,  Thursday will be Neon day, and Friday will be ACC spirit day.
  • We wrapped up our Health unit and have begun our Science unit on "The Human Body."  One of my favorites!
  • Grade 5's will be starting a new math unit this week on statistics and probability.
  • Students have been working on their ABC Autobiography. We will be deciding a due date for this assignment tom.  It is my expectation that they have a couple of descriptive sentences for each letter of the alphabet.

  • It is so hard to believe that we are starting the second half of our school year!
  • I have been reading over the persuasive writing assignments and I hope to have them returned by Tuesday.  I am very proud of the hard work that my students put into these.
  • Mystery at Cranberry Farm projects are due on Tuesday.  There are four pieces to this project in case the outlines have been lost in the shuffle :o) 1) Title page 2) Artistic portion 3) Written portion and 4) The Most Exciting Part handout.  The students have had lots of class time to work on this project.
  • We will be wrapping up our Health unit on Friday with a quiz.  I will be giving the students their review on Wednesday or Thursday.
  • Lunch orders due tom.
  • Congratulations to everyone who placed in the Legion poster/poem contest.  I have the official placings at school and will post those names first of the week (I did not want to make any mistakes).

  • We are finishing up Mystery at Cranberry Farm this week.  The students have loved every second of it and I am sad to be finishing it on Tuesday.  Keep an eye out for a novel project that I will be assigning mid-week.
  • We are continuing to work on our persuasive writing throughout the week. The students will be choosing their topic to write about mid-week as well.
  • My math students were on fire this week!  I am so proud of their efforts!
  • I would like to extend an invitation to any parent/guardian who would like to come in and read a favorite book to our class for Family Literacy Day on Friday, January 27.   • We will be continuing to read Mystery at Cranberry Farm this week.  I am positive that everyone is enjoying the novel.  One of my favorite feelings as a teacher is to have my students want to continue reading.  I had this feeling every single day this week. :o)
  • We have been talking about the reading comprehension strategy of "Evaluating."  To evaluate, readers need to: recognize the difference between fiction, non-fiction, and info-fiction texts, form opinions about the content presented to them, be willing to confirm or adjust their opinions as they read and learn others' view, see events from other people's perspectives, back up their opions with evidence from the text, and critique the author's craft.
  • The grade 5' are having an oral math fact quiz on Thursday. Mr. Martin has been sending home flash cards for the grade 4's each night to be reviewed.
  • I am looking forward to another great week!

  • I am so excited to be starting our novel study on Mystery at Cranberry Farm!  This is my favorite fictional novel and I hope the students enjoy it as much as I do! We will be working on persuasive writing over the next few weeks as well.
  • Book order is due on Tuesday, January 10th.
  • The Grade 5's have started a new unit on multiplying and dividing larger numbers.  It is very important for the students to be reviewing math facts each night. They will be having an oral quiz on their math facts on Thursday, January 19th.

A New Year!

  • Welcome back everyone!  I hope everyone had an enjoyable and restful holiday.
